Birthing Kits Project

Most of us would do more for our babies than we have ever been willing to do for anyone, even ourselves.
Polly Berrien Berends

Children born in remote areas of developing countries are often born in conditions that most of us would consider completely unacceptable. Often the knife used to cut the umbilical cord is the same knife used to slaughter the goat. Birthing Kits are one way to help decrease the infection rate for both the mother and baby at the time of delivery.

We are praying that we will be able to assemble 50 kits to leave for future deliveries at Ahero/Wachara. If God tugs on your heart to help make this possible you can e-mail us at tlministry@verizon.net to make arrangements to drop off, send, or have us pick up items on the list below or you can make a monetary donation through the "Donate" page on the website.

Items for Birthing Kits

(1) 1-gallon “zip-lock” plastic bag, in which all other items will be placed.
(1) one-meter (approximately one-yard) square piece of heavy-gauge plastic – to be spread under the birthing mother
(3) “Chux” or blue pads to put under the mother so she doesn’t have to lay directly on the plastic
(3) pairs examination gloves – to protect mother, baby and helper
(1) bar (hotel-size is fine) soap
(1) candle, preferably 3-4 inches tall or bigger – for light, and to sterilize the blade
(1) book or box of matches – to light the candle! : -)
(1) new single-edge razor blade or scapel (make sure sharp side is safely covered) – to cut the umbilical cord
(4-8) sterile gauze pads or surgical sponges (4” x 4” or approximate) –in case bleeding occurs
(1) 1-meter or 1-yard length of fairly fine “string” or nylon cord – to tie off umbilical cord
(3) slim extra-absorption sanitary napkins, singly packaged – for afterward
(1) plastic garbage bag (to dispose of all this when finished)
(3) individual packets of Betadyne

We will put a message in each kit communicating God's and our love for those who are using the it. By God's grace, these kits will make a difference!
