Malaria - Can YOU Make a Difference?

If you want to go quickly, go alone. If you want to go far, go together.
-African proverb

According to the Kenya Medical Research Institute, malaria is the leading cause of morbidity and mortality in Kenya. It is estimated to cause 20% of all deaths in children under the age of five. And the most vulnerable to malaria are pregnant women and children. But the World Health Organization wants the public to know that malaria is both preventable and curable.

During our July medical mission we will be testing patients for malaria, treating patients, and distributing insecticide treated bed nets to pregnant and nursing women and families with children under the age of five. But we can only do this because of our generous supporters!

So, what can YOU do?
  • Click on the link below and read what the Center of Disease Control has to say about how to combat malaria
  • Go to www.touchinglivesmissions.org and click on the Donate page to help us purchase the mosquito nets
  • Contact us at tlministry@verizon.net if you would like to be a part of this medical mission team
By God's grace, together we can go far!

Do not withhold good from those to whom it is due, When it is in the power of your hand to do so.
Proverbs 3:27

Partnering with Others

"We are each of us angels with only one wing, and we can only fly by embracing on another."
Luciano DeCrescenzo

Another sweet partnership that God has cultivated for Touching Lives is with Water Missions International (WMI). By God's grace the eMI team had the privilege of being at God's Hill at the end of January when WMI was there! The WMI engineer is in the center of the picture below is surrounded by eMI team members, TLKenya volunteers, and community members.
WMI comes beside ministries in carrying out water surveys, finding reputable drillers, and in the installation of water treatment systems once a bore hole is drilled. Their commitment to excellence shines through all they do. It was a delight to meet a few WMI representatives "up close and personal"!

Then God orchestrated a special treat as we watched the drilling trucks drive onto the land, set up camp, and commence drilling the bore hole. It was a blessing to see community members congregate just outside the gate to take in the scene with joyful and hopeful eyes!

Even as all this activity was happening in the lower section of God's Hill, the WMI engineer and community members were working hard at the top of the hill digging the foundation for the water treatment house that will be instrumental in providing clean and treated water to the people of Sanjweru, Kenya for the first time. Only God! These pictures follow the progress of the construction of the treatment house up until the present.

We pray that your excitement is building as ours is, if so, there are three ways that you can have a role in this work that God is doing through Touching Lives:
  • Become a part of our worldwide on-line prayer by contacting us at tlministry@verizon.net. You'll receive weekly Praise & Prayer Updates and be invited to pray with us every Monday.
  • You can contact us at the above e-mail address if you feel God is calling you to go or send someone to Sanjweru, Kenya with our July medical and children's ministry mission team.
  • You can visit our Donate Page to financially support the completion of the solar pump and water treatment system that will provide the hospital and community with much needed clean and treated water.
No matter how you choose to support Touching Lives, words alone fail to adequately communicate the gratitude we have for you. We cherish all our partners and give all the glory to God.

Jesus...said to her, "If you knew the gift of God, and who it is who says to you, 'Give Me a drink,' you would have asked Him, and He would have given you living water."
John 4:10

It's in Giving that we Receive

"One thing I know: the only ones among you who will be really happy are those who will have sought and found how to serve."
Albert Schweitzer

The end of January/beginning of February brought a lot of activity to God's Hill in Sanjweru, Kenya. A team of architects and engineers with Engineering Ministries International (eMI) visited the site to begin the process of drawing plans for Sanjweru Medical Center. It was a blessing to observe this team's  commitment to excellence. There is no doubt that SMC will be a more excellent institution because of the touch of eMI on it!

The left you can see the surveyors surveying the land, and to the right the architects and engineers are working right at the site on their first day there!

The team toured the site, worked hard late into the each night, and every time they had a chance they enjoyed playing with the children!

The partnerships and friendships we have been privileged to form are both a blessing and a beautiful illustration of the Body of Christ in action! In coming posts we'll share some more of those partnerships and blessings. Please pray for Touching Lives and how God wants to use you in the incredible tapestry of love and service He is creating in Sanjweru, Kenya.

A Home for Touching Lives Kenya

"Faith sees the invisible, believes the unbelievable, and receives the impossible."
- Corrie Ten Boom

Our recent mission to Kenya had a construction component to it. Earlier this summer Touching Lives Kenya obtained office space in Magunga. But this office required a good bit of work to make it the TLK "home". What a blessing it was to watch as the local workmen transformed the four walls, two windows, and one door into a home where we can welcome visitors and introduce them to what God is doing through TLK.

It's with great joy that we announce that the TLK office is now "open for business" Monday through Friday from 9:00am to 5:00pm (closed from 12:00pm-1:00pm) and Saturday from 9:00am to 12:00pm. We welcome one and all to stop by and say hello!

A second construction project came in the form of a "thank you" to the Sanjweru Primary School Board as the second donor of the land for Sanjweru Medical Center. Touching Lives is partnering with the school board to add a much needed classroom to the school. The construction began not long before we arrived and already much work had been completed. To the left is pictured the contractor for the schoolroom with one of the construction worker. To the right you see some of the members of the Sanjweru Medical Center Community Committee with Kathi "inside" the schoolroom. As this is being posted the schoolroom is having the finishing touches applied and will be ready to use very soon!

It is only by God's grace and the generosity of the our donors as they respond to the leading of the Holy Spirit to support Touching Lives that these projects are coming to fruition. And the best is yet to come! We praise and thank God as we thank our supporters for all the He is accomplishing. May God continue to find us faithful in being His hands and feet to our brothers and sisters in need.

Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.

July Mission - The Goodness of God

The goodness of God is infinitely more wonderful than we will ever be able to comprehend.
--A. W. Tozer

From an earthly perspective the Touching Lives mission to Kenya had a focus on paving the way for the future ministry of Sanjweru Medical Center. But our spiritual "eyes" saw very quickly that the heart of this mission was that our God is good...all the time!

At the beginning of the trip Pam Harris-Haman was established her role as the Touching Lives Kenya Education Specialist when she taught 51 nurses from three facilities, including Kijabe Hospital. Pam taught two (2) day seminars on neonatal resuscitation and the principles of stabilizing an infant to prepare for transfer to another facility. While the seminars were a blessing to the nurses, we were blessed to be able to open and close each day of teaching with prayer! The Kijabe Hospital Continuing Education Department was a wonderful host for us and we're looking forward to many more seminars in the future.

Later in our trip Pam taught a First Aid/Safety/Hygiene class to 10 community leaders including nurses, teachers, and orphanage staff members at the Magunga Health Center in remote western Kenya. The class was well received with one attendee asking when the next class would be! One of the blessings of both of these educational opportunities was that even while Pam taught she was able to learn about the practices in each area - a true learning experience for everyone!

We were also able to visit St. Camillus Hospital and the Magunga Health Center, both in western Kenya. The directors of both facilities were quite hospitable in giving us tours and discussing the scope of the health they offer to each community. We were able to identify ways Sanjweru Medical Center will be able to partner with these health care providers to increase the effectiveness of all three facilities. We felt that God was revealing another piece of His plan for the future Sanjweru Medical Center!

As God began to establish these partnerships we got yet another glimpse of His goodness to His children in Kenya and to TLK. Even though He could accomplish His will without us, He is allowing us, both Kenyans and Americans, to be His hands and feet in this country. How good is our God!

We'll be sharing more about how God revealed His goodness during this mission in future postings. Thank you always for your faithful prayer and financial support.

Promoted to Glory

But I do not want you to be ignorant, brethren, concerning those who have fallen asleep, lest you sorrow as others who have no hope. For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so God will bring with Him those who sleep in Jesus.                           I Thessalonians 4: 13-14

The Touching Lives family is saddened by the loss of Jaduong Jeconiah Ombuoro Marire. Mzee Ombuoro was a visionary with a generous heart and one of the donors of the land that will be the home of Sanjweru Medical Center. But to us he was our rafiki, friend. It is our prayer that his passion for his community will touch many lives for many generations to come. We do rejoice that he is sitting at the feet of Jesus and has heard his Master say, "Well done, good and faithful servant." We ask that you join us in lifting his family up in prayer as they mourn their loss.

It is fitting that we have just added a Translate Button on here so that visitors can read our updates in their native tongue, including Swahili. You can also go to facebook.com/TouchingLivesMinistry to see updates regarding the coming events to celebrate Mzee's life.

We are so grateful that God gave us the privilege of sharing in the vision of this remarkable man - by His grace and for His glory.

God's promises - The Land

Heaven is under our feet as well as over our heads.
Henry David Thoreau

God promised the Israelites the Land. He called it the Promised Land. Yet the Land was just the beginning, the starting point, for His promises to the Israelites. His ultimate purpose was that His chosen people would love the Lord their God with all their heart, all their soul, and all their mind. But He also longed to bless them, after all, this was a land flowing with milk and honey. So His promise to them was basically the same as the promise in Jeremiah 29:11 and Romans 8:28 - He desires the best for us and that He is glorified as we realize what that means for each of us.

Although we did not fully understand the extent of God's plan, in 2007 God revealed His intention to bless the people of the Sanjweru/Magunga area in remote western Kenya on the shores of Lake Victoria...and His plan to allow Touching Lives Ministry and Touching Lives Kenya to be a part of that plan. On March 10, 2012 He gave us the Land. We call it God's Hill.

On that day, Mzee Ombouro fixed his thumb print (pictured above) and the Sanjweru School Board signed to donate God's Hill to Touching Lives Kenya to build Sanjweru Medical Center, by God's grace and for His glory.

We know that challenges lie ahead but we also know that what God starts, He completes. And so we invite you to join us on this extra-ordinary, divine journey through your prayer support, by going to serve the people, by sending others to go, and through your financial support. Stay tuned for updates on all that God is doing on "God's Hill". Even as God blesses us, may He be glorified!

And we know that all things work together for good to those who love
God, to those who are the called accoring to His purposes.
Romans 8:28

For I know the thoughts that I think toward you,
says the Lord, thoughts of peace and not of evil,
to give you a future and a hope.
Jeremiah 28:11

...being confident of this very thing, that He who has begun a good
work in you will complete it until the day of Jesus Christ
Philippians 1: 6
